That Sewer Smell? It’s Probably an Easy Fix

Why Does My House Smell Like Sewage? (And Why a Dry P-Trap Is Usually the Culprit)

Have you ever walked into your home and thought… “What IS that smell?” 👃🤢

You know the one. That funky, rotten egg, “something died” odor that seems to come from nowhere. You check the trash. You check the fridge. You sniff around like a detective, but nothing.

Then you notice it’s strongest near a sink. Or a floor drain. Or that guest bathroom nobody uses.

If this sounds familiar, take a deep breath (preferably outside).

Because the bad news is: something smells. But the good news? It’s probably the easiest fix in all of plumbing.

At Mobile Up, we’ve answered hundreds of calls about mysterious smells. And more often than not, the solution takes about 30 seconds and costs exactly zero dollars.

Let’s talk about the magic of the P-trap – and why keeping it wet is the secret to a fresh-smelling home.

WHAT IS A P-TRAP? (AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?)

First, let’s look under your sink. See that curved pipe? The one that looks like a “P” or a “U” on its side?

That’s your P-trap.

And it’s not just there to annoy you when you drop an earring down the drain.

That curve holds water. Always. Every time you run the sink, old water flushes out and new water fills the trap.

That little pool of water is all that stands between you and the sewer.

It’s a simple but brilliant design: water creates a seal. That seal blocks sewer gases from floating up through your drain and into your home.

No water in the trap? No seal. No seal? Hello, stink.

WHY P-TRAPS GO DRY

In a normal house with normal use, P-traps never dry out. Every flush, every shower, every time you wash your hands – you’re refreshing that water seal.

But here’s when problems happen:

1. Guest Bathrooms Nobody Uses

That powder room off the hallway? The one that only gets used when Aunt Martha visits at Christmas? Its sink hasn’t seen water in months. The P-trap evaporated long ago.

2. Floor Drains

Basements, laundry rooms, garages – these drains are easy to forget. But they have P-traps too. And without regular water, they go dry.

3. Seasonal Homes

Got a cabin you only use in summer? Every spring, that first visit comes with a lovely “welcome home” smell from every dried-out trap in the house.

4. Recently Vacant Homes

If you’ve been away for a few weeks – vacation, hospital stay, whatever – your unused drains can dry out.

5. New Construction or Renovations

Plumbers install drains early. But until fixtures get used, those traps sit empty for weeks. That’s why new homes often have weird smells at first.

A STORY FROM ARLINGTON: THE PHANTOM SMELL THAT DROVE A FAMILY CRAZY

Last year, we got a call from the Martinez family in Arlington. Mom, dad, two kids, one very confused golden retriever.

“For weeks, we’ve been smelling something awful,” Mrs. Martinez told us. “We thought it was the dog. We thought it was the trash. We cleaned everything. Bought air fresheners. Nothing works.”

We walked through their home, following our noses. The smell was strongest in the laundry room – but not consistently. Sometimes strong, sometimes faint.

Then we found it.

In the corner of the laundry room, there was a floor drain. You could barely see it – tucked behind the dryer, covered with lint and dust. The family had lived there for three years and never even knew it existed.

We pulled the cover. Shined a light down. Bone dry.

“That drain connects directly to your sewer line,” we explained. “The trap dried out years ago. You’ve been breathing sewer gases and didn’t even know it.”

We poured a bucket of water down the drain. Within minutes, the smell started fading.

Mrs. Martinez almost cried. “Three years. We’ve been smelling this for THREE YEARS. And it was just… water?”

We showed her how to add a little vegetable oil after the water – it floats on top and slows evaporation. Now she pours a cup down that drain every few months.

She sent us a photo last month: the drain, clearly marked with a bright sticker that says “WATER ME EVERY 3 MONTHS.”

Sometimes the smallest fixes make the biggest difference.

A STORY FROM BELLINGHAM: THE GUEST BATHROOM NOBODY USED

Then there was the call from Robert in Bellingham. Retired widower, lovely home, proud of his garden. But lately, something was off.

“My daughter came to visit with the grandkids,” he told us. “She walked in and said, ‘Dad, what’s that smell?’ I was so embarrassed.”

The smell came and went. Sometimes strong, sometimes barely noticeable. Robert had checked everywhere – trash cans, refrigerator, even under the house.

We walked to his guest bathroom. The one his daughter and grandkids used when they visited. But they hadn’t visited in four months.

“When’s the last time anyone used this sink?” we asked.

Robert thought about it. “Probably… April? When they were here for Easter.”

We ran the water for 30 seconds. Within minutes, the smell started to fade.

“That’s it?” Robert asked. “That’s all it was?”

“That’s it,” we said. “The trap dried out. Sewer gas was seeping up through the drain. Running water refilled the seal.”

Robert laughed at himself for a solid minute. “I was ready to call a plumber. I was ready to pay thousands. And all I had to do was turn on the faucet?”

Yep. That’s the beauty of understanding your home.

A STORY FROM MOUNT VERNON: THE SEASONAL CABIN SURPRISE

And then there was the call from Mount Vernon that broke our hearts – in a funny way.

A sweet older couple, the Hensons, had just arrived at their cabin for the first time in five months. They opened the door… and gagged.

“It was AWFUL,” Mrs. Henson told us. “Like something died. We almost turned around and drove home.”

They called us in a panic. “Do we need a whole new plumbing system? Is the septic failing? Are we ruined?”

We drove out and found exactly what we expected: a house full of dry traps. Every sink, every shower, every floor drain – all empty after months of disuse.

We spent about 20 minutes running water through every fixture in the house. Then we opened windows to air things out.

An hour later, the smell was gone.

Mr. Henson kept shaking our hands. “I was mentally writing a check for ten thousand dollars. And you just… ran the water?”

“That’s the plumbing business sometimes,” we said. “99% of the time it’s something simple. But that 1%? That’s why people panic.”

They invited us to stay for coffee. We sat on their porch, looking at the trees, and talked about grandkids and retirement and how nice it was to have a cabin.

Best “repair” call we ever made.

OTHER REASONS YOUR HOUSE MIGHT SMELL (WHEN IT’S NOT THE P-TRAP)

Of course, not every smell is a dry trap. Here are other possibilities:

1. Wax Ring Failure (Toilets)

If the smell is strongest near your toilet, the wax ring might be failing. This lets sewer gas escape around the base. Usually requires replacing the ring.

2. Vent Pipe Issues

Plumbing vents on your roof can get clogged with leaves, bird nests, or debris. This can cause odors and slow drains.

3. Sewer Line Crack or Blockage

If multiple drains smell and water is backing up, you might have a bigger issue in your main sewer line.

4. Bacteria in Drains

Sometimes the smell isn’t sewer gas – it’s bacteria growing in organic matter stuck in your drain. Regular cleaning helps.

5. Dead Animal

Unfortunately, sometimes something really did die. In walls, in crawl spaces, in attics. That smell is… distinct. And requires a different solution.

THE SIMPLE FIX (THAT TAKES 30 SECONDS)

Before you panic, before you call a plumber, before you spend any money:

✅ Find every drain in your house. Sinks, showers, tubs, floor drains, laundry drains.

✅ Run water in every single one. Just 30 seconds is enough to refill those traps.

✅ Check floor drains especially. They’re easy to forget. Pour a bucket of water down each one.

✅ For seasonal homes, add a little vegetable oil after the water. It floats on top and slows evaporation.

✅ Mark your calendar. Remind yourself to do this every few months for unused drains.

That’s it. That’s the whole fix. 30 seconds. Zero dollars. Fresh-smelling home.

WHEN TO CALL A PRO

If you’ve checked all your drains, run water everywhere, and the smell persists – then it’s time to call for help.

Call us if:
🛠️ The smell is strong and constant
🛠️ Multiple drains smell at once
🛠️ You hear gurgling sounds when water runs
🛠️ Drains are slow along with the smell
🛠️ You’ve ruled out the easy stuff

Sometimes it’s a vent issue. Sometimes it’s a cracked pipe. Sometimes it’s something in the main line. We’ll figure it out.

THE MOBILE UP DIFFERENCE

At Mobile Up, we don’t believe in charging people for problems they don’t have.

When you call us about a smell, we start with the simple stuff. We check your traps first. We show you what to look for. We teach you how to prevent it.

And if it’s just a dry trap? We’ll tell you that. We might charge for the visit if you’re far away, but we’ll be honest about what you’re paying for.

Because we’ve been where you are. We’ve smelled that mystery odor and panicked. We’ve learned that most plumbing problems are simpler than they seem.

And we believe that every homeowner deserves to know how their home actually works.

THE BOTTOM LINE: WATER IS YOUR FRIEND

That little pool of water hiding under your sink? It’s doing important work. It’s guarding your home against the sewer. It’s keeping your family from breathing things you don’t want to think about.

All it asks in return is a little attention. A little water now and then. A reminder that you haven’t forgotten about it.

So go ahead. Walk through your house today. Find every drain. Run some water.

Pour a bucket down that forgotten floor drain in the laundry room.

Run the sink in the guest bathroom, even if nobody’s visiting.

Give your P-traps a drink. They’re thirsty. And they’re working hard for you.

The Martinez family in Arlington learned this after three years of mystery smells.
Robert in Bellingham learned it when his daughter visited.
The Hensons in Mount Vernon learned it on their first day back at the cabin.

Learn it the easy way. Before the smell. Before the panic. Before you’re mentally writing a check for ten thousand dollars.

Just add water. 💧😄
